| W. Wyman King Academy opened its doors for the first time in 1972. Many parents, grandparents, and other concerned individuals wanted to create a school in this area that would offer the best possible environment for their children to be educated. They held to the belief that learning takes place best in a Christian environment where dedicated teachers maintain discipline in their classrooms while treating children with respect and requiring respect in return. Over the years, this has remained the philosophy and purpose of King Academy. |
| Students from prekindergarten through 12th grade attend King Academy in a traditional classroom setting. Kindergarten through 5th grade are taught in self-contained classrooms for each grade. The primary emphasis is on reading, writing, math, and language skills along with science, social studies, music, and physical education. Elementary students also have Bible, Spanish, Art, Computer, PE, Library and Music once a week. Grades 6, 7, and 8 are grouped together in a middle school setting with different teachers in Bible, language, reading, math, science, social studies, and physical education. Our high school students have the option of choosing a General Studies diploma or a College Preparatory diploma. |
| King has a computer lab with keyboarding and computer application classes for high school students. Kindergarten through 5th grade use the computers as their teachers regularly schedule computer lab time. We are constantly looking for ways to grow and improve in our computer program. |
| The King Academy library is fully automated and has a full-time librarian. We are constantly working to add to our collection of books, videos, CD's, and other materials that our students and faculty can use. Even though our students have a full schedule of classes, we attempt to provide as much time as possible during the day when our students can use the library. Many of our teachers, especially in the elementary grades, schedule regular times for students to come to the library as a class to have story-time or check out books. Students can also access the Internet in the library under the supervision of Mrs. Miller, our librarian. We also have access to DISCUS, South Carolina's Virtual Library. |
| King Academy is accredited by the South Carolina Independent School Association. SCISA provides many services to the school such as in-service training for teachers and interscholastic academic competitions for various age groups. The accrediting process occurs every three years with on campus visits by an accrediting team and written reports and records of the schools organization and programs. |
| The faculty of King Academy is made up of qualified and dedicated teachers. We carefully select our teachers and seek to hire those that are competent in their teaching areas and have a love for God and their students. |
| King Academy is served by a board of directors consisting of twelve members. Board terms are three years. Each board member must express a willingness to serve as a trustee in addition to having served a minimum of one year on a standing committee. The Board of Directors sets the policy of the school and is focused on governance and not day to day management. |
| A cafeteria serves lunches daily for a minimal cost. The food is prepared daily by the cafeteria staff and includes a variety of choices throughout each week. |
| Over 90% of King Academy graduates continue their education after high school. Many of our students go on to Clemson University, the University of South Carolina, Furman, Presbyterian, Newberry, The Citadel, Columbia College, Lander, and other fine colleges and universities and do well. We also have some students that choose to attend the outstanding technical colleges that are in our area. The King guidance department works with each student to help him or her choose the right school for their needs and complete the applications and forms for admittance to that school and any scholarships that are available. |
King offers a wide range of activities for students of all ages. The younger children perform a Christmas musical each year and they also have a chance to be involved with intramural basketball. Grades 6 through 12 have a various clubs including Junior and Senior Beta Clubs that they can join.
We have a variety of athletic teams that participate in the SCISAA league. Our young men can participate in junior varsity or varsity football, basketball, and baseball. Junior varsity and varsity teams in basketball, cheerleading, softball, and volleyball are all available for our young ladies. Over the years, King has been very competitive in athletics. We are in the state play-offs on a regular basis and have won state championships in basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country,sporting clays and baseball. |
If you are interested in sending your child to King Academy there are a few simple steps that you need to follow. Contact the school and set up an appointment for you and your child to meet the administration and visit the school. An application for each child needs to be completed and returned to the school with $225 deposit. Each child entering K5 or above must take an entrance test. This can be done at any time upon receipt of the application and deposit. If you decide not to enroll your child after this step, $100 of the deposit will be returned.
Once the application process and testing have been completed, King Academy will review the test results, check references, and look at the academic and disciplinary history of your child. Within a few days of completing this process you should be contacted to inform you as to whether or not your child has been accepted as a student at King. All fees will be refunded for any student that is not accepted. |
